ACCA 2011 History Day
by Doug Young
March 4, 2011

Active imaginations have often drifted into other worlds imagining themselves steeped in the history and cultures of former times. ACCA students were able to experience history in a creative way for our first History Day on March 4, 2011. There was, however, little need for imagination because the halls and classrooms were a visible display of famous historic characters. Amazingly our foreign and domestic guests dwelt together peacefully with little difficulty understanding or relating to one another!
You would have seen Leonardo da Vinci stroking his (her) beard quipping with Aphrodite and then interacting with Orville Wright and Eli Whitney. Or you would have seen Johnny Appleseed giving Pharaoh an encouraging pat on the back, or the shepherd David rubbing shoulders with Abraham Lincoln and Squanto. Pilgrims and Egyptians dwelt together in unity and Moses could be seen kicking a soccer ball while skillfully raising and adjusting his tunic without missing a beat. Archimedes was frequently spotted adjusting his mustache after shouting “Eureka!” And Julius Caesar shook many hands while preserving his regal aura.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and sensed a new connection with the time periods that we study at ACCA. Mrs. Williams 5th and 6th graders presented to the other students as Madame Tussaud’s famous wax museum. When a student touched one of the 5th/6th grade “statues”, they would come to life and tell us about themselves. We heard from Robert E. Lee, Martin Luther King Jr., Jesse James, Jackie Kennedy, Rosa Parks, and many others. Though this was ACCA’s first History day, we look forward to many more in the years to come!
